Former Matungu MP David Were is mourning the death of his son, Hannington Were, who was killed during a night attack in Kisumu on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

His father said the two were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), but Hannington had already died on arrival.
He explained that the pair had opted to walk due to the absence of boda bodas along the way, but were attacked near Makini School by individuals believed to be boda boda riders. Hannington was stabbed twice in the back and also struck on the head with a metal rod.
The former MP added that his son, who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), had no known disputes at work or in the community and was not involved in any controversy. He also noted that Hannington’s wife was unaware he had left home, as he was not known to walk at night.
His friend, who was with him during the attack, is receiving treatment at JOOTRH after sustaining serious injuries.
Police visited the scene and hospital, confirming that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the attackers. It remains unclear whether anything was stolen.

In a separate incident in the same area, a night guard was injured during a robbery at Migingo Fish Supplies Shop in Obunga. The attackers reportedly forced their way in after jumping a locked gate, assaulted the guard with an iron bar, and stole several items including televisions, a CCTV screen, kettles, shoes, a phone, and cash.
Police suspect former employees may have been involved, and investigations are ongoing.
